  1. The Council also spends $3million each year on an item called Tanagta Whenua. There is no description of what this is for or why this is paid.

    This is despite having numerous Iwi on various committees and being paid for their attendance and having a Maori ward.

    This is the equivalent of more than 30 average Council staff salaries.

    If this is for Iwi consultation I can’t see how such manpower is required to address Maori affecting concerns when they are already represented.

    I am unaware of legislated requirements to make extraordinary payments to Iwi.

    Remember that the Treaty of Waitangi is between the Crown and Maori. Councils are not part of the Crown and that have requirements to apply legislation and not assume Crown responsibilities.
